Ashlin Gross hit five 3-pointers to lead the Panthers (15-5), despite spending about as a much time on the bench as she did in the game.
“She’s a ranked eighth-grader,” IMG coach Pat Amico said. “She’s coming off an ankle injury, so she’s just getting back. She did an incredible job.”
Gross didn’t score her first point until halfway through the second quarter, and had eight points to lead all scorers at halftime.
“I told them to adjust, they just didn’t,” Lake Wales coach Demetrius Sanders said. “We weren’t rotating like we wanted to. They weren’t aggressive after the ball.”
The Highlanders (8-12) controlled the game early, and led 14-10 at the end of the opening quarter. Pendleton rifled back with a 15-2 run in the second quarter and led 25-21 at halftime. Gross scored all eight of her first half points during that span.
Lake Wales trailed 37-32 entering the fourth quarter, but went on a 6-0 run to take a one-point lead.
But the Panthers called a timeout with four minutes remaining, and went on a 12-0 run that put them on top for good.
“We had some opportunities, we just didn’t take advantage of them,” Sanders said. “With new coaches, they’re still getting used to our philosophy. They’re not used to working hard, but they will be.”
The Highlanders were led by Kateisha Wright, who scored 10 points. No other players finished in double figures for the Highlanders. Stephanie Grant and Maeleesa Strong each added eight points.
Only one player besides Gross was in double figures for the Panthers - Ashlie Smith, who scored 14. Five players for the Panthers scored two points.
